  The two sides are trying to find a way to make the so-called Irish backstop

  more acceptable.

  The EU’s proposals focus on the bolstering the review system that’s already set

  out in the deal, and which aims to track progress toward getting rid of the

  backstop, according to the people.

  It goes further than concessions outlined in a letter to May from European

  Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and Council President Tusk in

  January, according to the people who spoke on condition of anonymity. But it

  still falls short of what the U.K. initially demanded. The EU is waiting for the

  U.K. to respond.
